So I am on a little bit of a role with new series and I could not be more excited for this one. I am really trying to use this blog as a place to express myself and do posts that I am really excited about. I have thought long and hard about the kinds of posts I want to write and I have come up with lots of fun ideas for the coming months. For this series, every month I am going to be doing a style post with inspiration from a favorite show, book or movie. September’s inspiration post is Nancy Drew for many reasons. First, I love her as a character and I love her outfits (especially in the 2007 movie with Emma Roberts). One thing I really love about her style is the retro/vintage that I can mix into modern trends and pieces. The other big reason I chose this one first is that the new TV series is coming out in October (see trailer).
I chose three outfits from different scenes in the movie and I added one bonus photo at the end that to me reflects the new series. Challenging myself to create these looks out of items I already own was so much fun!
Outfit #1: Penny loafers are a defining aspect of a Nancy Drew outfit. My favorites are these G.H. Bass & Co. ones but Everlane has some really great options! She also always layers either a sweater or trench coat. She adds quite a bit of plaid in the movie. She wears a trouser often but I paired this sweater and loafers with a plaid skirt as well since it is a little more my style!
Outfit #2: Nancy Drew wears a very similar outfit in the opening scene as well as the later scene with the car bomb. This is the outfit for sleuthing plus it is so comfortable. It also looks so classy but not too dressy! She wears a lot of headbands in the movie but I wanted to add my own style to these outfits as well. I did add a jeweled headband in with this outfit.
Outfit #3: Last but certainly not least is a classic tweed suit/dress. Personally this might be my favorite outfit ever. I don’t get to wear it much since it it pretty dressy but I love it for a Nancy Drew look. This is a look inspired by her first day of school outfit as well as the outfit she wears to the courthouse.
So I wanted to add a bonus outfit to tease the new TV show a little! Her style is definitely going to be way different but I am still super excited to watch. The most I got from the preview was her work uniform (a dress over a white shirt, still classically Nancy Drew) and her classic denim jacket look. I will alway be a denim jacket fan so it definitely felt more like me!
Last year I did a series of seasonal posts that highlight my favorite things about that season. See last year’s Fall Feels post. I wanted to continue that tradition but I am challenging myself to not repeat anything from last year’s post. My list now includes both things I love about a season and things that remind me of that season. Fall is my favorite so it is when I started this series and I can’t wait for everything it has to offer. I have already been wearing lots of fall clothing and have found some great decorations for the season (mums and pumpkins are my favorites!).
Reading Harry Potter
Butternut squash soup
I also linked my Halloween movies post last year that I will link again since I definitely stand by all of these movies as great fall and halloween inspiration!
In all honesty the past couple of months have been absolutely insane. Our two roommates are both moving to Oregon so we are in the middle of trying to fill the basement apartment. Aiden has had some health stuff so that has also been at the top of my mind. Work is totally crazy as well. My to-do list is very long and only keeps growing. To say the least I have been incredibly overwhelmed! We do have a lot of thing planned for the next few months, some of which should be very fun. This past week has mostly been work with a few fun things thrown in.
Last weekend my uncle and cousin visited! It was absolutely amazing and I could not have asked for a better time with them. I did not take a single picture because I was just in the present and not really thinking about it! They came so that my cousin could check out USU and they also brought some vintage furniture of my grandmother’s. My cousin and I explored campus for a while and then picked up some bread from Crumb Brother’s. We took them to Le Nonne’s (on of the best restaurants in Logan) for dinner and then made an apple crisp with apples from our tree for dessert.
I always dedicate Monday and Tuesday to teaching so I spent lots of time prepping the lab, writing out the protocol and then teaching. In general it is the most stressful time of the week but it went pretty smoothly. Aiden came into work with me a couple times throughout the week and we got lunch at the Skyroom (on USU’s campus and Morty’s (both are delicious and reasonably priced). We ended the day on Tuesday my watching Chiddy Chiddy Bang Bang (a classic favorite).
I honestly don’t have a ton to say about the rest of the week. Lots of stuff came up with work so I ended up spending way more time that expected working. Friday was my favorite. I stopped working early and we had a great night making food and watching The Ugly Truth (such a funny rom-com, Aiden loved it too!). Yesterday (Saturday) I spent pretty much the whole day working but we did go on a nice walk and watched Friends while we ate dinner.
A few interesting articles:
12-year old singing ventriloquist. Aiden showed me the champions America’s Got Talent final this morning and we went down a rabbit hole watching this girl. She is absolutely amazing and I can’t get over it!
Clothing obsession: white sweater from Everlane. It is freaking amazing and I am obsessed.
I also gave Trunk Club a try this week. I thought it might get me out of my comfort zone but it kind of made me realize that I really just like shopping for myself (also I think I can find way better deals on things). Don’t get me wrong they did have some really cute things and I did keep 4 of the 15 items they sent. I just decided I probably won’t do a whole post on the experience so I wanted to mention it here.
Reading: 100% obsessed with the book Bringing Down the Duke right now. The romance definitely just sucked my in and it helped a ton that it is set around the movement to allow women to vote in the 1800’s in England. I highly recommend it!
Skin care: I am not that big into make up and skin product but my friend recommended Drunk Elephant a few months ago and I have been trying it out (I started with the littles kit). So far I really love it but I am not sure which products I will be repurchasing.
Oh also I am super psyched for Grace and Becca’s new podcast mini series, Bad on Politics! They host Bad on Paper podcast which is one of my favorite book podcasts. They are going to be discussing the 2020 election and they will be bringing on some great guests.
Other things on my schedule include lots of work things, shooting some really exciting posts and I have a friend coming to visit at the end of the week!
Happy Saturday! I hope you are having a good weekend. Mine has been pretty filled with work so far but I am hoping to get something fun in tomorrow. White is traditionally a summer color when it comes to clothing but I love wearing it year round and wanted to share some outfit inspiration for wearing white this season. I hope to follow up with a winter, spring and summer post as well!
Outfit #1: This might actually be my favorite outfit this fall. The brown tones are perfect for fall and the sweater so comfortable. I also really love leopard for this time of year!
While I love fashion and I love expressing myself through what I wear, I am also a scientist, environmentalist and a nature enthusiast. These can be very conflicting seeing as how much of an impact the fashion industry has had on the environment. I have waited way to long to write this post and to take this issue seriously so it is very much time to hold myself accountable.
I will start by saying that even if you don’t really care about trends or style you can care about this issue because you still have an impact on the environment via what you wear because everything we buy has an impact. Beyond just direct environmental impact (throwing things away), our decision to buy something supports a certain company and sends a specific message. We might be supporting a company that doesn’t regulate their factories or uses highly impactful material or that produces a lot of waste, and not even know we are doing so. Therefore I think sustainable style is a problem for everyone, not just people who care a ton about what they wear.
I do think that, as someone who does love clothes and style, I should be even more conscious of the industry and impacts it has both socially and environmentally. My goal for right now is to go on a journey that delves into sustainable style and to revisit who I am as a consumer. I am going to share this journey through a series of sustainable style blog posts. I will start with one post a month. That post is going to be well-researched and it will always have a personal twist that gives some insight into how I am doing on this adventure and how I am going to change things or try things based on that month’s topic.
Over the past five or so years I have really struggled with expressing both of these sides of myself (my love for fashion and my love for the environment). I often sort of argue with myself about what to do and how to care for the environment while still expressing myself and sharing a big passion. I can’t say I have come to a place that I feel good about yet but I want to get there. I think this series is not only a way for me to share what I learn but also to really push myself to do better and be more conscious of my impacts. I want to feel good about both of these passions and feel like they can, in some way, interact positively.
I want to also give a disclaimer that I am not going to change my wardrobe or ways (as a consumer) overnight. I am not just going to throw things away and buy new things, from companies that are ‘environmentally friendly’, this also defeats the point seeing as I would be throwing a way a lot of clothing. I am going to be methodical and take time to figure out how to bring two worlds together (in the context my wardrobe and my closet). My goal for the next post in the series will be to focus on getting some real facts about the industry and some basics things I can do.
I invite you will follow along on this journey, AND I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences throughout the process!!!
