The last couple of days have been really rainy (we even had a little snow). We always need moisture over here so it was a great way to end the week. I spent some time getting cozy with a book and a good cup of tea on Friday and went out for a fun adventure on Saturday. The rain gave me a great excuse to try my new rain gear. I really loved both the umbrella and the yellow rain jacket! They have held up well so far and I love how the umbrella covers so much.
With all this cool weather finally hitting us I wanted to share my favorite navy jacket. For these photos I wore it with jeans and hunter’s since we have started getting some rain, especially in the mornings. I love the weight of this jacket because it is actually pretty thick and perfect for cool fall days. I shared some of my favorite double-breasted jackets in stores now at the end of this posts.
Great peacoats: this one from Old Navy is super affordable and very cute, also this one from Thread & Supply on Nordstrom’s website is such an amazing deal (comes in great colors as well!)
Today I am rounding up my favorite items under $50. Most of what I included has been on my own wishlist for several weeks. I think affordable fashion is definitely a priority for most people, myself included, so I want to do some sort of series in the future that focuses on looking great on a budget.
1. Velvet Bow: This is just the perfect fall accessory. It would be great for the holiday season and can easily carry into winter. I have mentioned it before in my post on Fall Trends but I couldn’t help but add it to this post as well since I have been eyeing it for so long.
2. Tie Booties: I am not sure where I original saw these posted but I found them again while looking at that statement bootie trend. I bought several pairs of shoes from Sole Society this summer and I like their styles as well as the quality for the price.
3. Ruffle Sweater: There have been at least three J. Crew sweaters that I have been looking at recently. I am so impressed with some of their styles and prices this season. This sweater is great because it is on trend for fairly cheap and the color choices are perfect (they go with anything!).
4. Plaid Blazer: This one I am seriously thinking about purchasing. The plaid blazer is such a classic piece, especially for fall. I have been looking for one that is good quality but not too expensive. This one seems great but I can’t be sure of the quality yet.
5. Leather Belt: A leather belt is a staple wardrobe item. Especially a brown leather belt. I love the equestrian embellishments on this buckle, its just such a classic touch that could really pull an outfit together.
6. Grey Sweater: This sweater caught my eye because it is one that won’t really go out of style. In a neutral I would wear something like this for so many years to come (very worth the price).
7. Burgundy Bag: Burgundy is very in right now and it is a great color for both the fall and winter seasons. I found this bag when I was looking specifically for pieces in that color. I didn’t get it but I keep coming back to it since it looks like such a great bag (in both color and style).
8. Slide Loafers: Loafers are an essential shoe to have. The are comfortable, work appropriate and very classy. Slides are so easy to just slip on, immediately taking an outfit to the next level. Nicer ones can be pricier but these seem like a great pair, for relatively cheap.
9. Watch: I am on the search for a good watch that will look great with my outfits. I have always been the type to wear super simple and durable watches but lately I have been feeling the need to step up my game. I think I am going to ask for one for Christmas however I have been looking for some cheaper ones and this one caught my eye.
10. Plaid Skirt: Plaid in general is definitely a very fall/winter pattern. Even though the styles have changed quite a bit, plaid skirts are classic items and definitely are worth it. This one is not too expensive and I like the simplicity of the pattern.
As always feel free to share any thoughts, items or questions. I love the feedback and I love engaging readers!
I decided to change when I am posting and which posts I am posting when. I am going to try to do an Around the Web post every Monday. I really enjoy writing them and researching for these posts because I feel like I learn so much in the process and it gives me a chance to really catch up with the world on Sunday afternoons. Today New York Fashion Week is definitely at the top of the line when it comes to fashion news. The hurricanes that have been hitting the south coast are also top news and deserve time, attention and care! Enjoy!
Motivation inspiration: This booklist came at a great time for me. I have been in a bit of a funk partially because I have been under the weather and I am in a major transitional period of my life. I have in general really wanted to read more lately and I think reading something that might help me in other parts of life would be really healthy for me right now.
Reviewing NY Fashion Week: Yes one of the greatest times of the year happens to be fashion week and NY Fashion week brought lots of exciting spring styles. I highly enjoyed browsing through Pop Sugar’s pics from fashion week. It is a great summary of trends from the shows. I loved the Rosie Assoulin collection and Man Repeller did a great little post on her spring collection.
Motherhood Around the World: Cup of Jo does this series on motherhood around the world. It definitely gives a new perspective on many aspects of childhood. Motherhood is not something I have thought much about but this series has given me a new perspective on what it is to grow up and learn about the world around you as a child. There are lots of ways to teach and bring up children, no one right way.
Hurricane help: It is very humbling and uplifting to see even those who have been displaced themselves helping hurricane evacuees. With so much hype about the storms and the devastations that followed it is great to see a bit of humanity’s positive side. We never know when we ourselves will be in need of help. I most definitely believe that taking care of each other makes such a better world, although we have such a long way to go as there are many people suffering around the world!
A Beautiful Fall Floral: Blair Eadie wore this gorgeous jacket in an August post and I just couldn’t help but fall in love with it. It is such a beautiful statement piece, I just wish it were more affordable! Although I do love florals I wasn’t so sure about the fall floral trend until I saw this jacket.
Although it was hard to pare it down I rounded up those article/things etc… that have been open on my browser all week. I also signed up for The Skimm which has been an amazing way to get my daily dose of news! Enjoy!
The Skimm: So I am probably pretty late to the game on this one but I recently discovered The Skimm and it has been such an incredible way for me to always stay updated on current news. I always found it pretty daunting and hard to find the important parts of whats going on in the world. It is definitely subjective but the daily email has really helped me keep up. It just makes the whole news thing super easy!
Lace dress from Nordstrom: I desperately wish I had a fall wedding to go to this year. I fell in love with this dress but just don’t have a good excuse to buy it right now! It is so pretty though and would be perfect for a fall wedding or any event in the coming months.
Bullet Journaling: I always wish I could journal more. It is almost always I time thing, I don’t feel like I have the time during the day to do a full on journal entry for myself. When I do get to it though it helps me sort through things so much. I am hoping that bullet journaling will be an easier way to go about this. I am psyched to try it out! Throughout the day I do the whole jotting down quick notes to myself about a variety of things but I am hoping the intentionality of bullet journaling helps to organize my thoughts a little.
DACA: Yes this is one of those things that is all over the news right now. This article lays out what is currently happening with DACA and gives the lowdown on some DACA replacements that could give those effected by the removal of DACA some protection. For those of you who don’t know DACA is the executive order placed by Obama which allows illegal immigrants brought over as children to work and study in the US and it protects them from deportation.
Guide to September’s Fashion Magazines: This is an article on Man Repeller that lays out all of the September fashion magazine issues. It was super helpful for me because it highlights what that issue covers and makes choosing much easier (I never have time to read everything I want!).
The month of July has been a little less exciting than the last but fun nonetheless. I was working almost everyday but still we found time to explore and eat some great meals. Cambridge City definitely popped up quite a bit and I had time to cook some fun meals with friends. Just as July is ending I am driving out to the east coast for some vacation time with family and friends. It is sure to bring lots of fun and new, exciting places. Here are my ten favorite looks from the month of July:
Happy Saturday morning! Here is my round up of interesting articles I have been reading this month. I did include a book that I am reading now as well, Classic Style, which is amazing! Just a warning this Around the Web is definitely mostly fashion.
Rodarte spring 2018 Ready-to-Wear: Rodarte and Proenza Schouler debuted their 2018 ready-to-wear collections at the fall 2018 haute couture week in Paris. This is impressively a whole season ahead of most designers. Although this is so far ahead considering most people are just focusing on the fall season, it is definitely an interesting move on the designer’s parts. There were lots of florals, texture and blush (not going anywhere!), there was also some black in the Rodarte collection.
Lucinda Chambers interview: This fired vogue editor goes at the fashion industry in a way you would not expect. Yes this news is from the beginning of July but it was just such an interesting perspective to me especially because she is really wasn’t afraid to say what she wants about the industry. It is definitely worth the read.
Classic Style by Kate Schelter: This book is definitely changing my perspective on how I create and define my style. I am not finished reading but it has been so great so far, I can’t rave about it enough. She addresses how classic style is not about having tons and tons of clothes but quality pieces that really define who you are what you stand for. Her illustrations are also beautiful!
Misty Copeland poses as Edgar Degas paintings: This is such a cool project, putting a twist on classic paintings. I love Misty Copeland and these photographs are incredible and definitely help to redefine a part of our culture.
Walking Dead season 8: Strange as it might be, I am such a huge Walking Dead fan and I am so excited for the next season. I have been waiting for a while and it is set to premiere on October 22nd.
Goop Summer Reading Guide: This has been pulled up on my computer for at least a week because it has given me such great ideas for reading right now and really inspired me to get into a more regular reading routine. I am really excited to read several of their new picks and their classics list definitely gave me some ideas.
This dress is amazing! It is so cute and the fabric is comfortable with such a nice flow. The back also is very interesting. I do recommend sizing down since it is Free People however it is very adjustable at the top and around the waist which I didn’t expect but actually really like.
I had been eyeing the Pebble color for a while because I thought it would be so versatile and my mom ended up getting it for me for my birthday. It is definitely one of my favorite finds this summer. It has been so perfect for everything from my graduation party to just casual walks through downtown Santa Fe.
I hope everyone had a fun 4th of July. It was definitely a fun one with such amazing food (my friend made strawberry rhubarb pie and it was delicious) and I was very impressed with the small town Indiana fireworks we watched.
Floral dresses are definitely a must during the summer, especially as it starts to really get warm. I was shopping with my mom and sister while I was home and we found this gorgeous Free People dress. It is so lightweight, comfortable and perfect for summer outings. The white and purples look so great and I just love how it falls. Not only that but it is on sale right now!
The flowers again are just so beautiful. I can’t help but take a million pictures every time I go on a walk.
It is time for barbecuing, fireworks and fun with friends. So as is fairly common in most places, the fireworks in our area were on Saturday night so we will be driving to a nearby town to picnic with some friends and watch the fireworks there. It should be a blast, I always love watching fireworks and am super psyched to see these friends.
Summer is definitely in full swing now and there is a lot to look forward to. June was an especially fun month with lots travel and time with my family. July will be mostly work with a few weekend adventures and time to just chill out. August will bring more travel which I am very excited for! It definitely has been a great post-college summer so far.
This such an amazing shirt from J. Crew. It is so comfy, the perfect weight and I love the blue stripes. I also picked up this scarf from a really great thrift store in town, Designer Consignor, and it looks great with this hat.
