Sustainable Style #1: A New Series

While I love fashion and I love expressing myself through what I wear, I am also a scientist, environmentalist and a nature enthusiast. These can be very conflicting seeing as how much of an impact the fashion industry has had on the environment. I have waited way to long to write this post and to take this issue seriously so it is very much time to hold myself accountable.

I will start by saying that even if you don’t really care about trends or style you can care about this issue because you still have an impact on the environment via what you wear because everything we buy has an impact. Beyond just direct environmental impact (throwing things away), our decision to buy something supports a certain company and sends a specific message. We might be supporting a company that doesn’t regulate their factories or uses highly impactful material or that produces a lot of waste, and not even know we are doing so. Therefore I think sustainable style is a problem for everyone, not just people who care a ton about what they wear.

I do think that, as someone who does love clothes and style, I should be even more conscious of the industry and impacts it has both socially and environmentally. My goal for right now is to go on a journey that delves into sustainable style and to revisit who I am as a consumer. I am going to share this journey through a series of sustainable style blog posts. I will start with one post a month. That post is going to be well-researched and it will always have a personal twist that gives some insight into how I am doing on this adventure and how I am going to change things or try things based on that month’s topic.

Over the past five or so years I have really struggled with expressing both of these sides of myself (my love for fashion and my love for the environment). I often sort of argue with myself about what to do and how to care for the environment while still expressing myself and sharing a big passion. I can’t say I have come to a place that I feel good about yet but I want to get there. I think this series is not only a way for me to share what I learn but also to really push myself to do better and be more conscious of my impacts. I want to feel good about both of these passions and feel like they can, in some way, interact positively.

I want to also give a disclaimer that I am not going to change my wardrobe or ways (as a consumer) overnight. I am not just going to throw things away and buy new things, from companies that are ‘environmentally friendly’, this also defeats the point seeing as I would be throwing a way a lot of clothing. I am going to be methodical and take time to figure out how to bring two worlds together (in the context my wardrobe and my closet). My goal for the next post in the series will be to focus on getting some real facts about the industry and some basics things I can do.

Transitioning to Fall

I can’t believe its already almost the end of August! This summer has really flown by. Classes at Utah State start next week and I definitely need to get myself mentally prepped and ready to teach and for my own classes. Fall is hands down my favorite season though so overall I am super pumped for the next couple of months. Seasonal transitions can be tough so I thought I would do a post on transitioning a wardrobe into fall. It is still so hot (at least in Utah!) but a lot of people are going back to school and in general feeling ready for fall style (I already want to be wearing sweaters).

I rounded up some great pieces for this transition and I am going to share a couple of outfits that I am excited to wear during the next couple of months.

Slide1

Loafer: They are a great school option that is also so comfortable plus I love that this snakeskin print elevates the more traditional look.

Grey jumpsuit: I am a lover of jumpsuits and I just ordered this one for fall. I was on the fence about the grey but it is a neutral so it goes with everything and can definitely be dressed up.

Wide leg pant: These pants are amazing! The print is so fun and perfect for fall. They also look so comfortable and airy.

Wrap dress: This is another great option for school/teaching but also great for warm weather. I am so tempted by this, its just so cute and could be great for spring and summer as well!

Tank top: A tank top in a fun fall color is another great way to transition into fall. I love throwing a cardigan or blazer over top for teaching or in the evenings. This Reformation top is another fun option (I love this stripes) and I have this BP cami in the leopard and the black and love them both.

Striped blouse: I don’t immediately think of blue and white as fall colors but I think the colors bring some of summer with a great style for fall. It would go so well with a brown corduroy skirt. Plus it would totally work for spring and summer as well!

Heeled sandal: Sandals are also not something I usually associate with fall however I do think these could be so cute with some fall outfits for the rest of August and September. I just ordered them in the taupe and am so excited for them to arrive!

Olive jumpsuit: Yup another jumpsuit. This color is so pretty for fall and I can’t wait to wear it with some sneakers or leopard flats.

A few other things I am eying include this leopard skirt, fun sunglasses and an Everlane sweater.

I do have a Pinterest board with outfit ideas for summer to fall transitions. Some outfit ideas:

IMG_4457IMG_4463

T-shirt is BP (I freaking love this tee so much and wear it all the time, I also have it in black!), Skirt is BP, Booties are Vince Camuto, Bag is Madewell (my go to right now, great size and material), Sunglasses are Karen Walker (a big splurge but an all time favorite and the absolute best quality)

IMG_4471IMG_4476

Jumpsuit is BP, Sunglasses are Quay (similar), Hat is Brooklyn Hat Co. Palm Fiber Safari Hat (similar), Sandals are from Birkenstock, Bag is last year Faithful the Brand (similar), Cardigan by Leith.

Tank is old (this one is very similar plus is on major sale), Jeans are Levi’s, Wedges are Treasure and Bond (they definitely live up to the hype, so cute and actually so comfy), Bag is Madewell, Sunglasses are last year Quay (similar).

I hope you are having a great weekend, spending time both relaxing and having fun. And let me know what you are into for the transition into fall, I love getting new ideas and inspiration!

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Picks

So I told myself I didn’t want to post about this sale however I have spent way too much time thinking and planning for this sale so I decided to channel some of that into a post despite knowing how much other people post about it. It really is a great opportunity to prep for fall if you are in need of any clothing or beauty products. There are also some amazing basics that go on sale for great prices (especially for the quality, e.g. BP. and Caslon). I think the best part of the sale is that there are several great deals on things that don’t usually go on sale (e.g. Barefoot Dreams, Spanx, Barbour, Patagonia). Just in case you are not familiar with this sale I will quickly go over how it works. The sale opens today (July 12th) for cardholders and then it opens to the public on July 19th and runs through August 4th. The second important thing to know about this sale is that it is such a big deal because its the one sale that occurs at the beginning of a season. This means that everything is brand new and has not been sitting on a shelf for months.

First I want to share the products that I have continued to use over and over again, that are included in this year’s sale. These are the products that for me have been most worth the money. This includes mostly things that I have had the most wear out of for the price and several things that are hard to get for lower prices:

Tory Burch Riding Boots: These were one of my first Nordstrom sale purchases and they are such a great closet staple that will last a lifetime. I highly recommend getting these in the sale if you have had the on your wish list. They are such a deal!

DSC_0210

Hunter Boots: Although I did not purchase these from the sale, it is a great place to buy them. They are such a great deal and will last forever. If I repurchase ever I will definitely get the packable ones so they are easier to travel with.

IMG_5094.jpg

BLANKNYC Moto Jacket: I have one in black, I paid full price, and it is totally worth it. They quality and fit are incredible and despite thinking I wasn’t very into leather I wear it all the time.

DSC_0384

Spanx Faux Leather Leggings: I have the cameo ones from last year’s sale but I am considering buying they normal ones since they are a great deal and very versatile. I wear mine fall through spring.

dsc_0434

Zella Leggings: If you don’t already own Zella leggings they are a great closet staple for such a great price. I have worn them for workouts, around the house and even to dress up in.

IMG_3853

Zella Jogger: I bought these in last year’s sale and they continue to be my absolute favorite pair of sweatpants. They are so comfy and great for hanging around the house. I went up a size because I like my loungewear to be on the looser side.

IMG_5071

Patagonia: I am not including a specific one since I don’t have any of the items included in the sale but I will say that all of their stuff is such great quality and perfect for outdoor adventures. They are also a really great company with an amazing vision and mission.

I have looked through everything that is in the sale and I chose my top three items from the from clothing and shoes/accessories categories. Although I did lump skirts, denim and pants together because in all honesty I was not that impressed with the selection. I organized it kind of how I am shopping and thinking about the sale. I will do a post in a week or so with more specific categories. What I am looking forward to this year:

A Birthday Adventure

SO last Monday was my 24th birthday. I really wanted to spend it up at Bear Lake, reading and swimming but Aiden had planned to take me to brunch and then to a bookstore (my favorite place ever!). We decided to fit it all in. The day started off great, I had to go into work for an hour but then we went to one of my favorite restaurants, Herm’s Inn at the base of Logan Canyon. We then drove down to Ogden for some book browsing at Barnes and Noble. Despite having a crazy long booklist I still managed to choose too many! I always wish that I had one extra day to every normal day just for reading.

We drove back to Logan and started up the canyon to Bear Lake. Aside from some construction things were going fairly smoothly until we started the last ascent up Bear Mountain. I was driving and the car just would not accelerate. It was really freaky and we pulled over several times trying to figure out what the problem was. Things would go back to normal and then maybe thirty seconds later we would start to decelerate again. Eventually the car just would not go at all so we pulled over and managed to get to a parking lot off the side of the road.

The biggest problem was the we had no reception at all so there was no way to get ahold of aaa or anyone else. A very nice man stopped to help us and ended up driving us to Garden City (on the other side of the mountain) where we were able to call aaa and then our friends. Our friends met us at Zipz for dinner (an delicious raspberry milkshakes) and we all went for drinks at the country club while we waited for the tow truck.

It was quite the adventure and we did not get home until past midnight (the tow truck took forever and ended up being very expensive). The reason I wanted to share this story is that it taught me a very valuable lesson. I had an expectation for how the day was going to go and I know things go wrong all the time but I really did not expect this. It could have been really sucky but the whole day actually ended up being really fun! The car having issues and the expenses are definitely a bummer but having Aiden there really helped me feel better and I actually had a great time with my friends while we were waiting.

I am so so appreciative of all the nice people out there willing to go out of there way to help stranger. I also can’t thank Aiden and my friends enough for helping out and for making a bummer of a situation tons better!

Rainy Days

The last couple of days have been really rainy (we even had a little snow). We always need moisture over here so it was a great way to end the week. I spent some time getting cozy with a book and a good cup of tea on Friday and went out for a fun adventure on Saturday. The rain gave me a great excuse to try my new rain gear. I really loved both the umbrella and the yellow rain jacket! They have held up well so far and I love how the umbrella covers so much.

I hope you are having a good weekend!

Navy Peacoat

With all this cool weather finally hitting us I wanted to share my favorite navy jacket. For these photos I wore it with jeans and hunter’s since we have started getting some rain, especially in the mornings. I love the weight of this jacket because it is actually pretty thick and perfect for cool fall days. I shared some of my favorite double-breasted jackets in stores now at the end of this posts.

Great peacoats: this one from Old Navy is super affordable and very cute, also this one from Thread & Supply on Nordstrom’s website is such an amazing deal (comes in great colors as well!)

10 Fall Favorites Under $50

Today I am rounding up my favorite items under $50. Most of what I included has been on my own wishlist for several weeks. I think affordable fashion is definitely a priority for most people, myself included, so I want to do some sort of series in the future that focuses on looking great on a budget.

1. Velvet Bow: This is just the perfect fall accessory. It would be great for the holiday season and can easily carry into winter. I have mentioned it before in my post on Fall Trends but I couldn’t help but add it to this post as well since I have been eyeing it for so long.

2. Tie Booties: I am not sure where I original saw these posted but I found them again while looking at that statement bootie trend. I bought several pairs of shoes from Sole Society this summer and I like their styles as well as the quality for the price.

3. Ruffle Sweater: There have been at least three J. Crew sweaters that I have been looking at recently. I am so impressed with some of their styles and prices this season. This sweater is great because it is on trend for fairly cheap and the color choices are perfect (they go with anything!).

4. Plaid Blazer: This one I am seriously thinking about purchasing. The plaid blazer is such a classic piece, especially for fall. I have been looking for one that is good quality but not too expensive. This one seems great but I can’t be sure of the quality yet.

5. Leather Belt: A leather belt is a staple wardrobe item. Especially a brown leather belt. I love the equestrian embellishments on this buckle, its just such a classic touch that could really pull an outfit together.

6. Grey Sweater: This sweater caught my eye because it is one that won’t really go out of style. In a neutral I would wear something like this for so many years to come (very worth the price).

7. Burgundy Bag: Burgundy is very in right now and it is a great color for both the fall and winter seasons. I found this bag when I was looking specifically for pieces in that color. I didn’t get it but I keep coming back to it since it looks like such a great bag (in both color and style).

8. Slide Loafers: Loafers are an essential shoe to have. The are comfortable, work appropriate and very classy. Slides are so easy to just slip on, immediately taking an outfit to the next level. Nicer ones can be pricier but these seem like a great pair, for relatively cheap.

9. Watch: I am on the search for a good watch that will look great with my outfits. I have always been the type to wear super simple and durable watches but lately I have been feeling the need to step up my game. I think I am going to ask for one for Christmas however I have been looking for some cheaper ones and this one caught my eye.

10. Plaid Skirt: Plaid in general is definitely a very fall/winter pattern. Even though the styles have changed quite a bit, plaid skirts are classic items and definitely are worth it. This one is not too expensive and I like the simplicity of the pattern.

As always feel free to share any thoughts, items or questions. I love the feedback and I love engaging readers!

Around the Web

I decided to change when I am posting and which posts I am posting when. I am going to try to do an Around the Web post every Monday. I really enjoy writing them and researching for these posts because I feel like I learn so much in the process and it gives me a chance to really catch up with the world on Sunday afternoons. Today New York Fashion Week is definitely at the top of the line when it comes to fashion news. The hurricanes that have been hitting the south coast are also top news and deserve time, attention and care! Enjoy!

IMG_0726

Motivation inspiration: This booklist came at a great time for me. I have been in a bit of a funk partially because I have been under the weather and I am in a major transitional period of my life. I have in general really wanted to read more lately and I think reading something that might help me in other parts of life would be really healthy for me right now.

Reviewing NY Fashion Week: Yes one of the greatest times of the year happens to be fashion week and NY Fashion week brought lots of exciting spring styles. I highly enjoyed browsing through Pop Sugar’s pics from fashion week. It is a great summary of trends from the shows. I loved the Rosie Assoulin collection and Man Repeller did a great little post on her spring collection.

Motherhood Around the World: Cup of Jo does this series on motherhood around the world. It definitely gives a new perspective on many aspects of childhood. Motherhood is not something I have thought much about but this series has given me a new perspective on what it is to grow up and learn about the world around you as a child. There are lots of ways to teach and bring up children, no one right way.

Hurricane help: It is very humbling and uplifting to see even those who have been displaced themselves helping hurricane evacuees. With so much hype about the storms and the devastations that followed it is great to see a bit of humanity’s positive side. We never know when we ourselves will be in need of help. I most definitely believe that taking care of each other makes such a better world, although we have such a long way to go as there are many people suffering around the world!

A Beautiful Fall Floral: Blair Eadie wore this gorgeous jacket in an August post and I just couldn’t help but fall in love with it. It is such a beautiful statement piece, I just wish it were more affordable! Although I do love florals I wasn’t so sure about the fall floral trend until I saw this jacket.

Around the Web

Although it was hard to pare it down I rounded up those article/things etc… that have been open on my browser all week. I also signed up for The Skimm which has been an amazing way to get my daily dose of news! Enjoy!

IMG_1174

The Skimm: So I am probably pretty late to the game on this one but I recently discovered The Skimm and it has been such an incredible way for me to always stay updated on current news. I always found it pretty daunting and hard to find the important parts of whats going on in the world. It is definitely subjective but the daily email has really helped me keep up. It just makes the whole news thing super easy!

Lace dress from Nordstrom: I desperately wish I had a fall wedding to go to this year. I fell in love with this dress but just don’t have a good excuse to buy it right now! It is so pretty though and would be perfect for a fall wedding or any event in the coming months.

Bullet Journaling: I always wish I could journal more. It is almost always I time thing, I don’t feel like I have the time during the day to do a full on journal entry for myself. When I do get to it though it helps me sort through things so much. I am hoping that bullet journaling will be an easier way to go about this. I am psyched to try it out! Throughout the day I do the whole jotting down quick notes to myself about a variety of things but I am hoping the intentionality of bullet journaling helps to organize my thoughts a little.

DACA: Yes this is one of those things that is all over the news right now. This article lays out what is currently happening with DACA and gives the lowdown on some DACA replacements that could give those effected by the removal of DACA some protection. For those of you who don’t know DACA is the executive order placed by Obama which allows illegal immigrants brought over as children to work and study in the US and it protects them from deportation.

Guide to September’s Fashion Magazines: This is an article on Man Repeller that lays out all of the September fashion magazine issues. It was super helpful for me because it highlights what that issue covers and makes choosing much easier (I never have time to read everything I want!).
